The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC): Nursing Across State Lines

Key Points

  • 43 U.S. jurisdictions currently participate in the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • The NLC allows nurses to hold one multistate license and practice in other compact states.
  • Licensure is issued by your Primary State of Residence (PSOR) and recognized across compact states, similar to a driver’s license model.
  • Each state maintains authority over its Nurse Practice Act.
